April 9, 2015 Hike from Ponte Capriasca to Sala Capriasca, Bigorio, and Tesserete

We took the bus to the town of Ponte Capriasca, which is in the Lugano area. What is special about this town is that in its church, in which the architecture is nothing usual, one can find an original painting of the Last Supper. Sant'Ambrogio church has this special painting, as it used to be a part of the archdiocese of Milan (thus the connection). Although the painter has not been identified 100%, they believe it was the work of Cesare da Sesto and it dates from about 1550. He was a renaissance painter influenced by Leonard da Vinci. One main difference between Cesare's painting and Leonardo's is that Cesare painted the names of each of the apostles underneath their figure.

It is a wonderful work to see - and all without the crowds like for the original in Milan. Rick and I were the only people in this church, which is open to the public. Alone to enjoy this great work. I think this is one of the best kept secrets of Ticino.

We then continued our hike up to the next small town called Sala Capriasco, and then on to Bigorio - a little higher. The first church tower in the center is Sala Capriasca and the further one is another town called Vaglio.

A little closer view.

In Bigorio, a cute passageway in the old center

From Bigorio we followed the yellow hiking signs down to Tesserete. This is the main church. We enjoyed a beer after a long, hot walk, outside at the Irish bar!
